Day 3 - Invincible

One of the follies of the youth - to think that they are invincible. I was there once. I learned that no one is. This word caught my attention while the Justice Class were answering vocabulary questions with the words used in the selection, "Battle of Mactan", which appeared in Manila Bulletin in 2003.

Before the class began, I noticed that there were no boys inside their classroom. Ma'am Luces asked why the boys were asked to remain in their line after the flag ceremony. Turned out, they did not attend the event in the ACC Gym last Thursday.

We were asked to check their drawings about the battle of Mactan. Here are our favorites:

The drawing is really good but they just don't look like they are fighting. I gave it 9/10

The class discussed background information about the battle of Mactan and their drawings and scores were presented. Christian's drawing of Magellan and Lapu-lapu, fighting while wearing red stilettos stood out. The drawing was displayed on the door. I think that he was very creative and tried to inject humor into the drawing to avoid having a drawing just like everybody else. I commend his thinking outside-the-box and his courage to take risks.

The class were asked to read the story orally, with students being called to read the paragraphs one at a time.

I also learned a few things about the battle:
1. Raha Humabon was a coward who accepted Magellan and even offered to make his men come with Magellan to fight against Lapu-lapu and his men.
2. Magellan was too proud to accept and went there with his own men to prove the superiority of the Spanish Army.
3. It was not Lapu-lapu who actually killed Magellan. It was one of his men.
4. I have no idea how Lapu-lapu died. :-( (Looking it up)

Here's what I found:

How did the country's first hero Lapu-Lapu die? Some historians said he hid in a cave and lived there until his last breath while some said he became a rock and lived in the deepest part of the sea. - http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/tv-current-affairs/07/30/09/kim-atienza-faces-lapu-lapu

Then, Ma'am Luces asked the students to get a 1/2 sheet of paper. No one was allowed to stand up and ask for paper from their classmates. It was a good way to teach the students about responsibility. I decided to do that in the future. :-) But, I also think I should encourage the students to use scratch papers whenever possible.

They were asked to answer the question, "What is the purpose of the writer in narrating the Battle of Mactan?"

I also wrote down my answer:

The writer's purpose in narrating the Battle of Mactan is to remind the Filipino people of Lapu-lapu and his men's heroism in the name of freedom and that if we have determination and sufficient motivation, we can win over any adversary - may it be the Spanish Army, betrayal, or today - poverty, corruption or crimes.

They were saved by the bell. It was made an assignment instead and Ma'am Luces said something that made my heart skip a beat: "Prepare kayo mamaya sa Faith ha." We had some batchoy and headed to the library.

Then, we went to the classroom of III-Faith. A male student asked us to come in. When Ma'am Luces arrived, she asked the class about their gift-giving activity. They said it went fine. Attendance was checked. Then, Ma'am asked them to take their books out. A student said, "Not again!" They discussed more about modals and answered some activities. The activities were checked and recorded.

After that, they were asked to read about the Battle of Mactan silently and were asked to answer the same question asked in Justice earlier.

In the next class, TMM with II-St. Joseph, I was checking the Faith's answers when Ramona caught a student playing music on the computer instead of working on his learning pathway. As a result, they were suspended from TMM.
